  • Overview

Welcome to Kumgang Tae Kwon Do!

Kumgang means Diamond. It stands for hardness. The Kumgang warrior represents the mightiest warrior and Mt. Kumgang is regarded as the centre of the Korean national spirit.

Taekwondo loosely translated means “the way of the foot and fist”. The history of taekwondo can be traced back over several thousand years. Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that has grown significantly in popularity during the past 60 years to the extent that it is now practised by over 50 million people in over 150 countries.

Training in taekwondo includes a variety of hand and foot techniques that form the basis of Poomsae (forms), Kyorugi (sparring), Hoshinsul (self-defence) and Kyokpa (breaking) exercises.

The following tenets are instilled as part of taekwondo training: Courage, Courtesy, Etiquette, Indomitable Spirit, Integrity, Modesty, Preservance, Respect and Self-control, Honesty, Loyalty and Gratitude.

Members of Kumgang Taekwondo practice under the direction and rules of Taekwondo New Zealand (TNZ), which is in turn affiliated to the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) based in Seoul Korea.

Our goal is excellence and understanding in the art of taekwondo. We hope to make a difference in the lives of our students.

Each year members of Kumgang Taekwondo have the opportunity to participate in various taekwondo competitions held in New Zealand and overseas. We also have a taekwondo camp once a year, which is great fun for everybody (white-black belt).

We currently have two dojangs (gyms) in:

    • Central East Auckland – Meadowbank
    • North Shore – Takapuna

Beginners are welcome anytime through the year and may participate in the initial class free of charge. Every new beginner gets a free Dobok (Uniform) for signing up with us.

We go through the school holidays and are closed only for a short Christmas break.
